CYBERJAYA 23 AUGUST 2024 – Leave a Nest Group is proud to announce the new launch of the LVNS Forest Project in Malaysia in partnership with Alphaswift, a leading Malaysian drone manufacturing company, Cyberview Sdn Bhd, Cyberjaya’s Tech Hub Developer and ACET Innovate Sdn Bhd, a Malaysian biotech firm that produces enzymes and biofertilisers. This collaboration aims to bolster Malaysia's reforestation efforts and uphold the nation's commitment to maintaining at least 50% of its land mass under forest and tree cover, as pledged at the Rio Earth Summit in 1992.
The LVNS Forest Project aligns with the Malaysian Government's goal of preserving the nation's rich biodiversity and natural heritage. According to the ‘State of the Malaysian Rainforest 2023' study, Malaysia risks losing 2.3 million hectares of its forests, potentially reducing the national canopy from 55.3% to 47.4%. This significant deforestation underscores the urgent need for reforestation initiatives, particularly in regions where forest cover is most at risk. The LVNS Forest Project seeks to counteract this trend by implementing reforestation initiatives that will help Malaysia maintain its forest cover at the critical 50% threshold.
Shafinaz Salim, Head of Technology Hub Development Cyberview said “As a tech hub developer, we believe that our shared future must be ensured and protected by employing technology. The launch of this groundbreaking forest project showcases how Cyberjaya continues to be a hotbed for innovative thinking and a focal point for R&D activities inter alia to benefit the environment and ensuring sustainability. We look forward to see positive outcomes from this project.”
Dr. Shian Lee, co-founder and CEO of Alphaswift said: “Our drone, the A-22 Falco hybrid electric aircraft, is specifically designed for long flight times, making it ideal for this mission. With a payload capacity of up to 500 seed balls and the convenience of petrol refueling, this drone can reach even the most remote and inaccessible areas. Equipped with a custom-built mechanical device from Leave a Nest, it accurately drops one seed ball at a time. Drone seeding is up to 50 times faster than manual planting. This rapid deployment is crucial for addressing urgent reforestation needs, especially in areas affected by wildfires or illegal logging. Through advanced self-flying software programming, our drone autonomously follows pre-determined flight paths, optimizing seed distribution. The use of drones can reduce reforestation costs by up to 80% compared to traditional methods.”
The LVNS Forest Project was established by Leave a Nest Group on March 3, 2023, with the participation of 12 Japanese companies and 1 Philippine startup, Galansiyang Inc.. This project is led by Leave a Nest Co., Ltd. to integrate technologies from all fields and implement development with the vision of “Realizing an autonomous social system between forests and people”. The project has six development approaches: Soil Development, Seeding Technology Development, Forest Management Technology Development, Valuables development, Valuation System Development, and Education and Cultural Development. Now 14 Japanese companies, 3 Japanese academic scientists and some startups from Japan and the Philippines are involved in this project to take an initiative to develop the six approaches. These efforts aim to restore devastated forests and develop innovative solutions for sustainable forest management.
Building on successful collaborations in the Philippines, Leave a Nest is excited to extend its partnership with Alphaswift in Malaysia. This collaboration will leverage advanced drone technology to enhance reforestation efforts, ensuring precision in planting and monitoring forest health.
The world's forests have been steadily declining since the Industrial Revolution, with over 5 million hectares lost in the past five years alone. The LVNS Forest Project represents a vital step toward reversing this trend and protecting our natural environment for future generations. Leave a Nest Group invites government agencies, academia, and corporations that share this vision to join us in this initiative. Together, we can create a sustainable ecosystem that preserves our forests and secures a healthy planet for generations to come.
